Mike Todd’s Introduction
- There is no distance to what God is doing
- Stay planted and you will see the fruit God has for you
- Culture is drying out right now for a Godly playbook of what relationships should be
- Declare that you will win in relationships. You can only win if you go by the playbook
Scripture:
Proverbs 14:12 New Living Translation (NLT)
12 There is a path before each person that seems right, but it ends in death.
- When we’re in these relationships, they can ‘seem’ right
- However, there is a path before each person that seems right, but it ends in death
- How many things are dying because it seemed right at the time?
- David had a dark side, and it was fueled by his attractions
- Attraction to thing culture entices us with, versus what God gives us, is what can lead to the death of things
Scripture:
2 Samuel 11:1-5 New Living Translation (NLT)
David and Bathsheba
11 In the spring of the year, when kings normally go out to war, David sent Joab and the Israelite army to fight the Ammonites. They destroyed the Ammonite army and laid siege to the city of Rabbah. However, David stayed behind in Jerusalem.
2 Late one afternoon, after his midday rest, David got out of bed and was walking on the roof of the palace. As he looked out over the city, he noticed a woman of unusual beauty taking a bath. 3 He sent someone to find out who she was, and he was told, “She is Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite.” 4 Then David sent messengers to get her; and when she came to the palace, he slept with her. She had just completed the purification rites after having her menstrual period. Then she returned home. 5 Later, when Bathsheba discovered that she was pregnant, she sent David a message, saying, “I’m pregnant.”
1. Attraction + Attention = Interaction (Equation of Attraction)
You can’t stop your attraction, it’s neutral; you can stop your attention.
You can’t stop your attraction, it’s neutral; you can stop your attention.
You can make powerless the interaction depending on the attention you give it or the lack thereof.
Many of us think we can just be around what we’re attracted to ‘just a little bit’.
If you are attracted to it, and if you give attention to it, then you will have an interaction with it.
What are you looking at right now that attracted you in one season, but the interaction is very close? The interaction that may interrupt what God wants to do in your life. Mike doesn’t want to keep seeing people that God has chosen to be relationship models for what he wants to do in your life being taken out by little stuff that we keep giving our attention to.
David, the king of an entire region, gets thrown off because he was peeking over a rooftop. You can forfeit a kingdom because of a peek-a-boo.
David fell into the trap of attraction.
Your attraction can be to something good. For example, living pure. You can have an interaction with your purpose.
2. Attraction Is Good When It is Submitted to God
When Eve was created, Adam was attracted to Eve. His attraction was submitted to God. It was sub to the mission.
Those same people had an unsubmitted attraction – the forbidden fruit. When they ate of it, the attraction they thought would bring satisfaction, subtracted them from the place they were supposed to live forever.
We have listened to attractions that have produced subtractions.
Jesus would have never had to die if Adam and Eve had control of their appetite.

You’re attracted to something, but you have decided that today, we’re going to control the appetite for cake. Mike won’t eat the cake, but there’s always an alternate.
Your appetite was for one thing, but the enemy will present an alternative.
When you say no to one thing, there will always be another option presented to you.
You have to have a resolve to not get into what your appetite is.

What if the last thing is the only thing God has ordained for you?
Your chicken salad would be enough if you didn’t taste everything prior to that.
When you take little tastes of everything before what is healthy, or God ordained for you, you’ll need to swallow or spit out what you have in order to receive what was already prepared for you.
You can’t be satisfied with one marriage partner because you tasted everybody else before you made the commitment. The marriage/the salad would be enough if you don’t keep going around tasting things and changing your appetite.
Many of us are sacrificing things out of selfishness. We won’t wait on the plan of God so we taste counterfeits.
God is saying to stay away from all of these things that look good at the moment but won’t make you any healthier.
We need to be cognizant of this when it comes to business, social media, everything.
What is your appetite telling you to eat that will end up leaving you hungry?
Some of us will pray for a goal, and right after the prayer, we will discredit what we prayed for by what we consume. You can discredit what you prayed for by what you consume.
Your appetite is killing your destiny. That’s what happened to David.
Everything that promises to satisfy is actually going to take away. David had an interaction with Bathsheba.
3. Interaction Always Leads to a Transaction
Whenever there is contact, it will lead to a transfer. You can’t touch anything without some of it getting on you.
Mike’s interaction with the cake got on him.
That’s why we wait to have sex before we get married, because there is a soul tie (transfer) that occurs when it takes place out of the container God has for us. There is evidence that you’ve been with something that wasn’t God’s best for you.
When David satisfied his temporary desire, he thought it was all good after that.
4. Transactions Always Have Evidence
There will always be evidence in your life from your transactions. There may be evidence in your attitude, or how you don’t pay attention to your family, etc. – there’s evidence of the transaction.
The evidence for David sleeping with Bathsheba was a baby.
She had evidence of them being together. It created something else that he didn’t know he would have to deal with. For you, it may have created something else that you didn’t know you would have to deal with for so long.
For example, being a friend to someone would make you a certain way for more months than you expected. That “doing this” would cause you to have to deal with insecurity. You may have been confident before having a relationship with someone. Now you may be insecure or depressed. You used to seek God and pray, but your interaction, due to your attraction, now has evidence, i.e., not praying, faith going down, pessimism instead of optimism, or a lack of self-awareness due to not reading the only word that reads you.
God will allow the Bible to read you. It reveals to us that there’s evidence that we haven’t been with God.
When the evidence goes out, we go into “the great cover-up”. We try to act like it didn’t happen and it wasn’t a big deal.
5. It’s Never True Satisfaction If There Has to Be an Infraction
David committed adultery from the jump. Bathsheba’s husband was fighting for David, and he literally betrayed someone who was loyal to him.
Your attractions can lead you to something you never thought you would do. Your attractions can cause you to hurt someone you were cool with.
How did the attraction start? How did it go from good/seeming right/not a big deal, to costing more than it was worth.
2 Samuel 11:6 New Living Translation (NLT)
6 Then David sent word to Joab: “Send me Uriah the Hittite.” So Joab sent him to David.
6. Human Infractions – Sin Reactions
David decided to bring her husband back to try and cover up his mistake. When men come back from war, they want to have relations with their wife. The idea was for the husband to think the baby was his.
When he gets home, his mind was at the battlefield and he doesn’t sleep with his wife.
Then David decided to come up with another plan. He decided to send Uriah on a special mission, to the front lines, to kill him. He tries to cover up his attractions and interactions by taking somebody out who had nothing to do with it.
There are so many people dying and being affected because we’re attracted to something that’s not ours.
Everything David did, he hasn’t felt the weight of it yet because he keeps covering it up. We think we’re living good lives because we keep covering it up. What’s done in the dark will always come into the light.
Nobody around David knew what was happening except him and God. It would end up subtracting from his life. You think you’re winning because nobody knows what your attractions have caused you to do. Be transparent today. Tell your spouse without them asking you. God is saying ‘you better go first’. God knows, even though people don’t know.
His attraction he’s trying to cover up is no different than Adam and Eve. God asked Adam, “where are you?” – he didn’t lose Adam. It was to see if Adam could locate himself. God is coming to search your soul. Where are you?
Adam and Eve went and got leaves and started covering up.
7. Your Attraction Can Make Someone Else a Fraction
David’s attraction to Bathsheba robbed her. You being a side piece is robbing you. Your value is going down because you have given in to somebody else’s attraction. Their attraction made you a fraction. For whatever reason, the thing that used to be whole in you is now ‘pieced out’, maybe that’s why they call it a side piece.
When Bathsheba heard her husband was dead, she mourned for him. She didn’t want him to die.
When the period of mourning was over, David sent for her.
2 Samuel 11:26-27 New Living Translation (NLT)
26 When Uriah’s wife heard that her husband was dead, she mourned for him. 27 When the period of mourning was over, David sent for her and brought her to the palace, and she became one of his wives. Then she gave birth to a son. But the Lord was displeased with what David had done.
It doesn’t matter if everyone is cool with your offense if the Lord is displeased.
8. It Doesn’t Matter if Everyone Is Pleased if God is Displeased
We can sum up foolishness to being called “a crazy season”…and say it’s all good now. That attraction caused despair, death, mourning, and pain.
If you really think that what you’re doing/done/listening to your attractions have landed you at a spot where you’re cool…know what God will rebuke you.
9. Attraction Can Equal Subtraction
Think about what you have the opportunity to lose, e.g. from going to a website, hanging with people, etc.
God sent a man of God to rebuke him.
2 Samuel 12:11-12 New Living Translation (NLT)
11 “This is what the Lord says: Because of what you have done, I will cause your own household to rebel against you. I will give your wives to another man before your very eyes, and he will go to bed with them in public view. 12 You did it secretly, but I will make this happen to you openly in the sight of all Israel.”
EDIT to Include the Rebuke for the Child to Die:
2 Samuel 12:11-19 New Living Translation (NLT)
11 “This is what the Lord says: Because of what you have done, I will cause your own household to rebel against you. I will give your wives to another man before your very eyes, and he will go to bed with them in public view. 12 You did it secretly, but I will make this happen to you openly in the sight of all Israel.”
David Confesses His Guilt
13 Then David confessed to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.”
Nathan replied, “Yes, but the Lord has forgiven you, and you won’t die for this sin. 14 Nevertheless, because you have shown utter contempt for the word of the Lord[a] by doing this, your child will die.”
15 After Nathan returned to his home, the Lord sent a deadly illness to the child of David and Uriah’s wife. 16 David begged God to spare the child. He went without food and lay all night on the bare ground. 17 The elders of his household pleaded with him to get up and eat with them, but he refused.
18 Then on the seventh day the child died. David’s advisers were afraid to tell him. “He wouldn’t listen to reason while the child was ill,” they said. “What drastic thing will he do when we tell him the child is dead?”
19 When David saw them whispering, he realized what had happened. “Is the child dead?” he asked.
“Yes,” they replied, “he is dead.”
David literally birthed into the world, his consequence.
This is a dangerous scripture. We can think God is mean because there are principles of consequence. They had a transaction, and the baby was the consequence of their interaction.
If you eat too much cake, there’s a consequence.
We want our attractions to subtract from us and for us to live without the consequence, but we can’t.
It won’t subtract from us in that moment, but it will subtract from us in our lifetime because we were led by our attractions in another season.
10. Repentance Brings Restoration
Repentance can lead to restoration. Restoration means to be restored better than new.
You may have felt like David, but if you would repent (turn), you can be restored.
Some of us will not turn to God.
After David found out he would be subtracted from, here is what happened:
2 Samuel 12:13-14 New Living Translation (NLT)
David Confesses His Guilt
13 Then David confessed to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.”
Nathan replied, “Yes, but the Lord has forgiven you, and you won’t die for this sin. 14 Nevertheless, because you have shown utter contempt for the word of the Lord by doing this, your child will die.”
He was forgiven at the moment he confessed and repented. This is God’s grace.
When we turn to God, His grace can rush over us like a flood. When we repent, God can provide restoration.
Even as you’re watching this, all of your infractions (thoughts, emails, etc.), you can remedy it right now by repenting. When you repent, repentance will lead to restoration.
Even so, repentance didn’t take away the consequence. David’s baby passed away. He repented and knew there was consequences for what happened.
You may still be in the middle of the consequence, but if your heart is right, you can still lift your hands in worship. Just make sure you repent and make sure your heart is right with God.
David knew his heart was clear after repentance, despite dealing with the death of a child.
Some of you have been rock hard because you don’t want to admit the infractions that occurred because of your attractions. Repent.
We need to go on the road to renewal as the body of Christ.
Road to Renewal: Reckless >> Responsibility >> Repent >> Renew
When you’re reckless, take responsibility, turn to God, and allow the grace of God to renew you.
God wants everything subtracted from you to be renewed.
2 Peter 3:9 New Living Translation (NLT)
9 The Lord isn’t really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent.
God isn’t being slow, He is being patient and trying to give you an opportunity to repent for yourself. After David lost the baby, he had Solomon, the wisest man that would ever live. What has set you back, when you repent, can be a set up. The next try can take you over the world. You can’t do it without repenting.
David is still cited as a man after God’s own heart. Even with the mess he made, God still doesn’t see him through our worst moment, but through the lens of Jesus. He sees what Jesus did for us, not what we’ve done.
When you turn to God, he sees the finish work of the cross.
Altar Call: Turn, repent from the way that you’ve been doing it, and follow Him. On the count of three, just slip your hand up in the air. This is the day of salvation, not tomorrow, it’s not promised to us. Right now, we have a moment to honor the principle of God by allowing Him into our heart. If that’s you, 1. You’re making the greatest decision you’ve ever made. 2. You are the one that God has been coming after and we’re proud of you. 3. Just lift that hand up right there. God sees you. It doesn’t matter if you’re in a room by yourself or with your family. You can put your hand down. Transformation church is a family so we pray together.
Let’s Pray Together: God, thank you for sending Jesus, just for me. Thank you for taking away all of my infractions. Today, I receive you, change me, renew me, transform me, I’m yours, from this day forward, in Jesus name, I agree, Amen.
