When you’re Marked, make sure you’re hearing the applause of God, not others, because it will throw you off.
When You’re Marked:
Valuable Relationships Will Reposition
Ex.) After David received praise for defeating Goliath and other enemies, Saul became jealous and wanted to kill him, despite having a close relationship.
You Must Have the Audacity to Honor
1 Samuel 24:4: The men said, “This is the day the Lord spoke of when he said to you, ‘I will give your enemy into your hands for you to deal with as you wish.’” Then David crept up unnoticed and cut off a corner of Saul’s robe.
When David’s men wanted David to kill Saul while he was in a vulnerable position, they valued revenge instead of Saul as king. What man honors is different than what God honors.
“Honor” is a kingdom word; it means to value, to prize, or to give weight to something.
God wants to add value to your situation, people, etc.
1 Peter 2:17: Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear God, honor the emperor.
Honor isn’t about “who deserves it”, because all deserve it. Honor isn’t about agreeing, but respecting.
1 Samuel 24:5-7: Afterward, David was conscience-stricken for having cut off a corner of his robe. He said to his men, “The Lord forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the Lord’s anointed, or lay my hand on him; for he is the anointed of the Lord.” With these words David sharply rebuked his men and did not allow them to attack Saul. And Saul left the cave and went his way.
David’s consciousness convicted him, and he honored Saul instead of killing him, which contrasts him from his men.
Honor Requires Action
1 Samuel 24:5-7: Afterward, David was conscience-stricken for having cut off a corner of his robe. He said to his men, “The Lord forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the Lord’s anointed, or lay my hand on him; for he is the anointed of the Lord.” With these words David sharply rebuked his men and did not allow them to attack Saul. And Saul left the cave and went his way.
David could’ve just kept the situation to himself (David not killing Saul, but another one of his men can) but he restrained his men as well, showcasing how they should honor him as well.
We have to “honor up, honor down, and honor all the way around.”
Isaiah 29:13: The Lord says: “These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship of me is based on merely human rules they have been taught.
Don’t be like these people.
Instead, be like Jesus, who at the Last Supper went on his knees and washed his disciples’ feet, knowing they will all betray him, especially Judas.
God Already Handled What You Think You Have To
1 Samuel 15:24-28: Then Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned. I violated the Lord’s command and your instructions. I was afraid of the men and so I gave in to them. Now I beg you, forgive my sin and come back with me, so that I may worship the Lord.” But Samuel said to him, “I will not go back with you. You have rejected the word of the Lord, and the Lord has rejected you as king over Israel!” As Samuel turned to leave, Saul caught hold of the hem of his robe, and it tore. Samuel said to him, “The Lord has torn the kingdom of Israel from you today and has given it to one of your neighbors—to one better than you.
These series of verses parallel David’s situation in the cave, but Saul discredited and dishonored Samuel while David honored Saul. God saw this parallel at the very beginning and anointed David for this very reason
